CLASS III

CEC/NEC (North American) Area Classifications

Ignitable Flyings and Fibers

Class III locations are those that are hazardous because of the presence of easily ignitable fibers or flyings, but in which the fibers or flyings are not likely to be in suspension in the air in quantities sufficient to produce ignitable mixtures. Easily ignitable fibers or flyings present a fire but not an explosion hazard. An example of this type of material is the cotton lint that accumulates in the lint trap of clothes dryers. Listed clothes dryers are designed so that even if the lint ignites, the fire will be contained within the dryer enclosure.

Division 1 A Class III, Division 1 location is a location where the equipment producing the ignitable fibers or flyings is located or where the material is handled. It is a location where ignitable concentrations of ignitable fibers or flyings can exist all of the time or some of the time under normal operating conditions.

Division 2 A Class III, Division 1 location is a location where the easily ignitable fibers or flyings are stored or handled, except in the manufacturing process (which is Division 1). It is a location where ignitable concentrations of ignitable fibers or flyings are not likely to exist in normal operating conditions.

Groups There are no groups in Class III locations.
